Kings Cliffe Residence Resort & Spa

Over the past decade, Montenegro has emerged as a prime location for the development of innovative, exclusive resorts that cater to a discerning clientele seeking a secluded, luxurious lifestyle, leveraging the country's pristine natural beauty. Such ventures are encouraged, provided they maintain the inherent aesthetic balance of the environment. While construction necessitates intervention, our commitment – as architects and as Montenegrins deeply invested in our nation's cultural and natural heritage – is to minimize disruption and enhance the existing landscape. The Kings Cliffe Residence Resort and Spa, located in the charming historic village of Reževići, a region rich in natural beauty, olive groves, and local character, has attracted significant investor interest in recent years, reflecting a growing trend toward developing private resorts that offer unique lifestyle experiences to both residents and international clientele.

Designated as a tourist resort, the Kings Cliffe Residence Resort and Spa comprises eight structures for residential, commercial, and tourism purposes, complete with supporting amenities and landscaping. To avoid stylistic elements associated with kitsch, such as faux postmodern architecture, overly aggressive folkloric motifs, and historical/ethnic ornamentation like balustrades and figures common in other regions, the resort’s design integrates seamlessly with the existing terrain while adhering to modern architectural principles and employing traditional, regionally sourced materials in keeping with local building traditions. Given the terrain’s topography, including areas of significant steepness, and the region’s unique native plant life, the buildings are thoughtfully integrated into the landscape, designed to harmonize respectfully with the land’s character.

This design approach contributes to the resort’s exclusivity by honoring the spirit of the place. Therefore, the choice of facade materials complements this principle of harmonious integration, leading to the use of more traditional materials. The building’s facade is clad in horizontally aligned, locally sourced stone with grout in matching stone and beige silicate render colors. Premium materials – grey and white local limestone, veined marble window frames, and high-quality wood joinery and pergolas – pay homage to local building traditions and the site’s architectural context. Neutral and earthy tones harmonize with the natural setting, integrating the development while respecting the site’s character. Landscape design enhances existing flora with indigenous and complementary species, preserving all existing olive trees and integrating existing green terraces and traditional “suvomeđa” dry-stone techniques.
